A madrasa teacher in Chittagong has been sentenced to life in prison for raping a student.

The convict, Abu Taher Shipon, 28, hailing for Sandwip upazila, was present in court when Judge Zainal Abedin of Chittagong Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal 3 announced the verdict on Thursday.

The judge had also slapped Shipon with a fine of Tk10,000, said Ziko Barua, a special public prosecutor of the tribunal.

Case documents reveal that the rape survivor, then a seven-year-old child, was a first-grader at a Noorani madrasa in Magdhara union of Sandwip. On June 9, 2021, Shipon took her to his office after an exam. He then raped the child and threatened to punish her if she told anyone about the incident.

Later, she fell ill at home and underwent treatment at the local upazila health complex.

The girl's father filed a case against Shipon at Sandwip police station on June 13 of that year.

After an investigation, the police pressed charges against Shipon on October 31 of the same year.

On April 20, 2022, the court indicted Shipon, initiating the trial.
