Twelve dengue patients died and 2,959 were admitted to different hospitals across Bangladesh in 24 hours to Thursday morning.
During the period, 1,097 dengue patients were hospitalized in Dhaka city while 1,862 were admitted to different hospitals outside the capital, a press release of the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) said.
This year, 364 deaths, the highest in a year since dengue was detected in Bangladesh in 2000, were reported from dengue, the daily statement of the DGHS said.
Bangladesh logged 281 deaths from dengue last year.
With the new cases, the total number of patients rose to 78,028.
Some 67,874 dengue patients have been discharged from different hospitals this year.
A total of 9,790 dengue patients are undergoing treatment at different hospitals. Of them, 4,460 are in Dhaka while 5,330 are outside the capital city.
Health experts warned the dengue situation may deteriorate this month and in the next month, asking authorities to launch a massive campaign against all types of mosquitoes.
Upon analyzing rainfall, temperature and humidity in Bangladesh, they described August and September as the most suitable periods for the breeding of Aedes mosquitoes.
Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne illness that occurs in tropical and subtropical areas of the world. Outbreaks of the disease are usually seasonal, peaking during and after the rainy season.
