The number of female drivers in the country is growing, and to assist more women to learn driving and step outside with their vehicles, Brac has conducted a six-month course and handed over certificates to 11 such female drivers.
At an event organized at the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) headquarters on Wednesday, Director of Brac's Road Safety Program Ahmed Nazmul Hussein handed over the certificates among the women.
One of the participants in the training program, Mousumi said she is eager to drive on the roads and fulfill the dreams of her family.
ABM Amin Ullan Nuri, secretary of the Road Transport and Highways Division, who spoke at the program as the chief guest, said: “Unemployment will be reduced if female drivers take this profession. We will have to consider different ways to bring them to this profession. Hopefully, one day we will see female drivers in smaller vehicles at least.”
Chairman of Bangladesh Road Transport Corporation (BTRC) Tajul Islam attended the program as the special guest. He said female drivers have a big scope in driving profession. “They must come forward towards the profession,” he added.
Nongovernmental organization Brac has been working towards women empowerment since 1972.
