Awami Jubo League, Swechchhasebak League, and Chhatra League—the associate wings of the ruling party Awami League—have chalked out plans to hold a massive peace rally in the capital on Thursday to protest the violent activities of BNP and its allied parties.

They aim to gather at least 100,000 people for the peace rally scheduled to be held at the South Gate of the Baitul Mukarram Mosque.

The BNP on Monday criticized the ruling party for announcing counter programs as its pre-scheduled Dhaka rally demanding the resignation of the government is due on Thursday.

Last week, the BNP organized road marches in Dhaka and other parts of the country when the Awami League held rallies on the same day. Violence between the supporters of the two parties and the BNP activists and the police was reported in nine districts, including Dhaka, on July 18.

Jubo League General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil made the announcement during a press conference at Bangabandhu Avenue on Monday morning.

It was also attended by Swechchhasebak League acting president Mesbahul Hossain Sacchu, General Secretary Afzalur Rahman Babu, and Chhatra League President Saddam Hossain, and General Secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Inan.

The leaders strongly condemned the recent attacks on their supporters during the countrywide road march observed by the BNP.

Earlier, Jubo League decided to hold processions in Dhaka and nearby districts yesterday in protest against the killing of its activist Azad Sheikh in Narail but later rescheduled the event to Thursday.

Azad Sheikh was stabbed to death by miscreants in Narail's Kalia Upazila on July 20.

Eyewitnesses said Azad participated in a procession under the leadership of Kobirul Hoque Mukti, a lawmaker from Narail-1 constituency, in the Jubo League's rally “Tarunner Joyjatra Samabesh” held in Khulna on Thursday afternoon.

When he and another Jubo League activist Jony Sardar were returning home a group of armed miscreants attacked them, leaving Azad dead on the spot. However, Jony suffered minor injuries.
