Bangladesh has set an example of successfully tackling disasters through coordinated efforts by the government, development and private actors, donors, and corporate bodies to overcome the impacts of Covid-19, experts said.
Speakers made such observations at a discussion program on Thursday afternoon organized to publish “Covid-19 yearbook 2020” by the non-governmental organization Brac.
They expressed their gratitude and recognized the efforts and sacrifices of the frontliners who put their lives at risk to tackle the pandemic tirelessly.
Brac’s Senior Director KAM Morshed moderated the event, which Planning Minister MA Mannan attended as the chief guest.
Minister MA Mannan said: “We will work together under the direction of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a combined approach to fight off any future Covid-19 wave.”
He also hoped the government and non-government organizations would work in a partnership model to attain sustainable development of the country.
Brac Executive Director Asif Saleh said the existing relations of trust between the government and the private sector in combating Covid- 19 were very promising.
Brac Health Nutrition and Population Program (HNPP) Director Morseda Chowdhury presented a summary of “Covid-19 yearbook 2020” at the event.

She said the book was aimed at recognising the collective efforts of the government and private sector and development partners in mobilizing resources to implement the Covid-19 response strategy and share the learning gained by BRAC as a way of battling this pandemic.
Dr Md Ashfaqul Islam Babul, director of NGO Affairs Bureau at the Prime Minister’s Office, said: “The policy recommendation and instructions [from the yearbook] will help us to implement our vision and our programs in future.
US Ambassador to Bangladesh Earl R Miller said: “I am proud of the partnership between the embassy and the government, Brac and other organizations who are fighting against this pandemic.”
Australian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Jeremy Bruer said that the way Brac was able to respond to the needs of the people of Bangladesh was truly exemplary.
Head of DFID Bangladesh Judith Herbertson said: “The pandemic did expose the fact that we weren’t ready globally on health, on social protection and on the management of our economies and supply chains. However, it has presented us with the unique opportunity to learn and to prepare a whole society with a global approach.”
Unilever Bangladesh Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Zaved Akhtar, Grameenphone Chief Financial Officer Jens Becker, Senior Development Officer of Canadian High Commission Joe Landry and Development Director of Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office of the UK government Judith Herbertson also spoke at the event.
