Defying the directives of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC), some people have set up unauthorized shades in the Gulshan residential area to sell sacrificial animals ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.
The DNCC earlier announced that no cattle market would be allowed to operate outside the 10 designated spots.
Residents noticed a shed on Gulshan Road No 103/104 on Monday and took to social media to question lax monitoring by the DNCC authorities against such illegal activities.
They have demanded that the shed, set up on a footpath using tarpaulin and bamboo, be removed immediately.

Moreover, two more temporary sheds are being constructed beside ZH Sikder Medical College Hospital on Gulshan Road No 104 and Manarat Dhaka International School campus on Gulshan Road No 106.
Residents fear that if the sale of sacrificial animals continues for the next few days and these sheds are used for slaughtering sacrificial animals on Eid day, the process will severely vitiate the environment.
The authorized cattle markets under the DNCC area are Brindaban in Uttara Sector 17, Kawla Shial Danga, Jamalpur Properties in Khilkhet Khanpara, Bhatara (Sayed Nagar) Cattle Market, Badda Eastern Housing, Rajdhani Housing and Bosila Garden City 40-foot road, Mirpur No 6 Eastern Housing, Rahman Nagar, Kachkura Beparipara under Mirpur Ward No 44, Dhaka Polytechnic Institute playground, and Gabtoli cattle market.
Asked about the illegal cattle markets in Gulshan, DNCC Chief Executive Officer Md Selim Reza told Dhaka Tribune that they would take steps against anyone violating the rules. "I did not know about it. We will look into the matter and remove the structures."
He added that no specific place was fixed for the slaughtering of animals this year, but officials were asked to supervise the waste removal process.
