Timeline: How Akhi, her newborn met tragic deaths

Central Hospital and gynaecologist Dr Sangjukta Saha are now playing a blame game over who is to blame for the two deaths

Mahbuba Rahman Akhi, reportedly fell victim to deception and wrong treatment following a misleading advertisement promising pain-free normal delivery by Dr Sangjukta Saha at Central Hospital.

She was apparently admitted under Professor Dr Sangjukta Saha's supervision due to labour pains. 

An alleged botched surgery at the hospital led to her newborn's death earlier this month and her's as well eight days after.

The following is a timeline of the events, from Akhi's hospitalization to the current blame game between Dr Sangjukta Saha and the Central Hospital authorities. 

June 9

Mahbuba Akter Akhi, who was under the supervision of gynaecologist Dr Sangjukta Saha during her pregnancy, is admitted to Central Hospital due to labour pains at night.

June 10

After attempts for a natural birth fails, an emergency c-section is performed, resulting in the birth of a child. The newborn passes away soon after.

Due to Akhi's condition being critical after the surgery, Central Hospital suggests her husband, Yakub Ali, shift her to another hospital. Akhi is then shifted to Labaid.

June 14

Yakub complains about “wrong treatment” and “deception” by the authorities at Central Hospital. He claims that their newborn child died due to the negligence of the hospital authorities.

A written complaint is filed at the Dhanmondi police station over the incident alleging deception and improper treatment by physicians Dr Shahjadi and Dr Munna. 

Police then arrest the two doctors of the hospital after the aggrieved family files a case at Dhanmondi police station.

June 15

The two arrested doctors give confessional statements before a Dhaka court in connection with the death of the newborn and the wrong treatment given to the mother.

June 18

Eight days after the death of her newborn, Akhi passes away at the CCU of Labaid Hospital.

June 19

The Central Hospital authorities acknowledge their negligence and blame Dr Sangjukta Saha for the wrong treatment of Mahbuba Rahman Ankhi.

Dr ATM Nazrul Islam, senior deputy director of the hospital, says: "Dr Sangjukta Saha, the hospital's gynaecologist, is responsible for the situation. It is because of her that this situation has been created today.”

June 20

Dr Sangjukta Saha, accused of negligence and malpractice, blames the Central Hospital authorities for the incident.

Claiming that Akhi was not her patient, she says: “Central Hospital made false statements about me.”

At a press conference at her residence in Paribagh, Dhaka, she says when Akhi was first admitted, she was not in the hospital. The hospital used her name without informing her.

June 21

The Central Hospital authorities again claim that Mahbuba Akter Akhi was admitted to the hospital under Dr Sangjukta Saha.

Mamunur Rashid Russell, manager of the hospital, at a press conference, says the hospital authorities have documents to back their statement. 

Additionally, a Dhaka court denied bail to two doctors, Dr Muna Shaha and Dr Shahzadi Mustarshida Sultana, who were arrested in the case filed in connection with the deaths.
