‘Election Commission needs to maintain fair electoral environment’

Election Commissioner Rashida Sultana urges everyone to fulfil their responsibilities properly

Update : 17 Jun 2023, 07:09 PM

Election Commissioner Rashida Sultana on Saturday stressed the need to maintain a conducive election environment in Bangladesh to ensure the engagement of political parties.

“Up until now, various political parties have been unable to reach a consensus regarding their participation in the elections, with some deciding not to partake due to the current circumstances while others remain in a state of indecision. The election commission wants to change this scenario,” said Rashida Sultana while giving a speech as a chief guest at a discussion with officials related to the Basail Municipality General Election at the Tangail Circuit House conference room.

"If we can properly conduct the polls leading up to the national election, creating a festive and welcoming atmosphere where people can vote and receive votes, many parties may reconsider their decision," said Rashida Sultana, hoping that this could alleviate the current predicament.

The Election Commission is giving high importance to the ongoing elections, she said, emphasizing that their primary focus is maintaining a fair election environment.

She further added: "Ever since we took responsibility, we have been hearing that the era of elections is over, and people can no longer vote. We aim to emerge from this situation. Before the national election, we need to recover from this state. Through these elections, we can prepare the groundwork for the national election.”

The election commissioner, in the end, urged everyone to fulfil their responsibilities properly.

“The Election Commission will not take responsibility for anyone's wrongdoing,” she warned.
