The European Union (EU) has expressed hope for the formation of a government in Bangladesh through free and fair elections.

Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen told reporters after a meeting with the visiting EU delegation in Dhaka on Wednesday.

The foreign secretary said: "We have addressed general human rights issues like the freedom to hold political rallies, form political parties, and freedom of speech in the Universal Periodic Review (UPR). We have provided detailed information based on that."

He further added: "There was no separate discussion about the election. However, we have said that the announcement of the election schedule for free and fair elections is expected tonight. We hope all parties will participate."

EU representatives met with the foreign secretary, the commerce secretary and the labour secretary.

Deputy Managing Director for Asia and the Pacific at the European External Action Service (EEAS) Paola Pampaloni led the EU delegation. EU Ambassador Charles Whiteley was present at the meeting.
