Mymensingh range Additional DIG Enamul Kabir has been accused of assaulting a lawyer with an iron rod.
The Mymensingh District Bar Association held an emergency meeting in this regard and demanded the suspension of the accused police officer.
The victim lawyer, Ashikur Rahman, made the allegations at the meeting on Thursday.
Lawyers said Ashikur Rahman, a member of the Bar Association, filed a complaint with the Mymensingh IGP against his brother Mizanur Rahman Sujon for his alleged involvement in anti-social activities.
Later, a hearing was held regarding the complaint at the office of the additional DIG on Wednesday.
The lawyers claimed the officer, out of nowhere, started shouting at Ashikur Rahman regarding his posture. Later when Ashikur introduced himself as a lawyer, the additional DIG started verbally and physically assaulting him.
The additional DIG later took an iron rod and started beating lawyer Ashikur, till he was severely injured, the lawyers claimed.
Ashkur Rahman was later taken to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital for treatment.
The press conference was attended by the President of the association Moazzem Hossain Babul, senior lawyer AHM Khalekuzzaman, senior lawyer Kabir Uddin Bhuiyan, and others.
In this regard, Mymensingh Range DIG Devdas Bhattacharya said: “What he did is his personal responsibility. But we will definitely take departmental action against him.”
Mymensingh range Additional DIG Enamul Kabir could not be reached despite multiple efforts.
