Report: 468 killed in May road accidents

Dhaka division saw the highest number of crashes

Four hundred sixty-eight people were killed and 769 people were injured in 496 road accidents in May, according to data aggregated by passenger welfare organization Jatri Kalyan Samity. 

At the same time, 43 people were killed and seven people were injured in 50 railway accidents, while 16 were killed, eight were injured and three went missing in 18 accidents on waterways, a Jatri Kalyan Samity report released on Wednesday.

During this period, 181 people were killed and 114 people were injured in 185 motorcycle accidents – 37.29% of the total accidents, 38.67% of the total number of deceased and 14.82% of the injured.

Most of the road accidents occurred in Dhaka division – 121 road accidents in which 110 people were killed and 151 injured. Sylhet division saw the fewest road accidents – 28 people were killed and 62 were injured in 24 crashes.

An analysis of accidents shows that 26.81% of the crashes occured on national highways, 35.88% on regional highways and 30.04% on feeder roads. 

Besides, 4.43% of the accidents took place in Dhaka city, 1.41% in Chittagong city and 1.41% at level crossings.
