Outraged leaders and activists of a faction of the Chittagong University (CU) Chhatra League have vandalized the hostel room of the university unit president after he reportedly assaulted a supporter of the group.
The agitated Chhatra League members also declared him persona non grata on the university campus.
Sources and witnesses said that the room No 311 allotted to Rejaul Hoque Rubel at the Shah Amanat Hall came under the attack around 2pm on Thursday.
Earlier in the day, Rubel beat up a member of the CU shuttle train-based Chhatra League group CFC.
However, it was not immediately clear why Rubel assaulted him.
The Chhatra League leader was not even available for a comment on the matter.
Around 1pm, members of the CFC group gathered in front of the hostel and staged a sit-in programme where they chanted slogans against Rubel, bringing many allegations against him.
They alleged that Rubel harasses fellow organization members if they go against his personal will or interest.
He made personal gains through many Chhatra Leagaue leaders and activists, they added.
CFC President Sadaf Khan, also the vice-president of CU Chhatra League, claimed that Rubel acknowledged that he had beaten up the group member.
“He (Rubel) did similar heinous acts in the past. Nobody is safe from him. We'd not tolerate any leadership that deviates from Chhatra League's principles,” he warned.
Rubel was a Statistics Department student at CU in the 2006-07 academic year. He completed his graduation in 2010.
In 2013, he received his Master's degree. Then, on July 14, 2019, he was appointed president of the CU Chhatra League chapter.
While the president's tenure is just one year, he is still in charge.
Other students in his batch graduated from the institution at least nine years ago. However, he is still living on the CU campus.
In March this year, he made headlines after a photo of him went viral, in which he is seen getting his feet massaged by two Chhara League leaders.
It garnered huge criticism online.
