Jahangirnagar University (JU) employees (third and fourth class) staged a sit-in program at the registrar's building for the second consecutive day and placed a 14-point demand.
The employees locked the main gate of the registrar building during the sit-in program at 9:30am on Thursday.
Later, Vice Chancellor Professor Md Nurul Alam had to break the lock and enter the registrar's building.
According to sources, on May 11, the university's employee union and employee association made a 14-point demand to the university administration.
Despite almost a month passing, the university authorities did not fulfill their demands.
If the demands are not met, the blockade will continue, said M Biplab Khan and Mohammad A Rahim, presidents of the employees' union and association.
Some of their demands include -- payment of 250 hours of overtime to bus helpers and conductors, granting permanent employment status to employees on both the master role and daily wages, and reducing house rent for third and fourth class employees
Rahima Kaniz, a contractual registrar of the university, said: "The logical demands of the employees will be raised in the syndicate and they have been told to take action accordingly. But it needs time.”
