Jahangirnagar University (JU) has suspended 12 students of the History Department over allegations of ragging first-year students from the same department.
The decision was announced in a notice signed by Acting Registrar Dr ABM Azizur Rahman on Saturday night.
According to the notice, the incident took place between 11pm on July 3 and 2am on July 4 at the Jahangirnagar University School and College playground. The accused students, all from the department's 2024–25 academic session, allegedly summoned first-year students of the 2025–26 session, verbally abused them, forced them to hold their ears, and harassed them under the pretext of teaching them "manners."
The university said such acts violate the Jahangirnagar University Students' Discipline Ordinance, 2018, which prohibits ragging and abusive behaviour on campus. The 12 students have been suspended pending further action.
