Former election commissioner Brigadier General (Retd) Dr Muhammad Sakhawat Hussain thinks that Thursday's Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) election was much better than the previous two polls held since 2013.
Talking to Dhaka Tribune on Friday afternoon, Dr Sakhawat said: “The election was competitive but without the presence of candidates from other big political parties. Moreover, the complete poll cast was missing, as 48% of votes were cast in this election.
“The election was fair so far. In this election, we have seen some bold steps from the Election Commission which is a very good sign. If the EC can continue this strength in the upcoming elections also, that will be great.”
Dhaka TribuneThe former military officer said: “Additionally, I think the recently issued visa policy of the US impacted the officials concerned who have conducted the election.”
But the upcoming parliamentary election would be different, he said.
“EVMs and CCTV cameras will not be installed in every polling centre. So we have to wait to watch the election under those circumstances,” Dr Sakhawat added.
