The Awami League Central Executive Committee has expelled suspended Gazipur City Corporation mayor Jahangir Alam from the party for disobeying the party's decision yet again.
Earlier, central leaders of the Awami League recommended the permanent and lifetime expulsion of the former mayor from the party.
The ruling party issued a notice in this regard on Monday evening.
Jahangir Alam recently defied the party directive and sought to run independently in the Gazipur City Corporation election against the party's candidate, Advocate Azmat Ullah Khan.
The Election Commission later nullified his candidacy because he was a loan defaulter.
However, Jahangir also submitted another mayoral candidacy for his mother and is now campaigning for her in the mayoral race, opposing the Awami League's mayoral candidate Azmat Ullah Khan.
According to meeting sources, Awami League leaders discussed the upcoming five city corporation elections in the meeting.
In particular, they talked about Gazipur City Corporation. The issue of Gazipur's expelled mayor Jahangir Alam was discussed in the meeting.
Party leaders said that Jahangir Alam had been expelled from the party for insulting the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the martyrs of the Liberation War, but his expulsion order was later revoked after he apologized.
However, now he has again disobeyed the party's decision and become a rebel candidate.
Not only he but also his mother participated in the polls. He is campaigning for his mother after his nomination was cancelled.
Jahangir was also speaking against the party there. For these reasons, Awami League leaders recommended he be expelled from the party forever.
In September 2021, videos of Jahangir making derogatory comments about the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the martyred freedom fighters of the Liberation War at a program went viral on social media.
In a meeting held on November 19 of that year, the ruling Awami League expelled Alam from his position in the party over the incident, which was followed by his suspension as GCC mayor by the local government ministry a few days later over various allegations.
The allegations included illegal land grabbing, not compensating people after taking over land for development and working against the public interest.
