If Bangladeshi people go and work in different countries, their income increases by more than 200%. On the contrary, this income increases by 20% as a result of migrating elsewhere in search of work within the country, according to a recent report by the World Bank.
Unskilled workers from Bangladesh immigrate to the United States with the largest increase in income, which can be more than 300%. Apart from the United States, the income of Bangladeshis increases more in Malaysia, where the income growth rate is 210%.
Among the Gulf countries, Bangladeshis spend the most in travelling to Kuwait. The United Arab Emirates is the most preferred country of Bangladeshis for work, according to the report, titled “World Development Report 2023: Migrants, Refugees, and Societies” which was released on Tuesday.
It will take at least another 40 years for Bangladeshis to achieve the increase in income at home which they get going abroad.
As Bangladeshi unskilled workers go to work abroad, their family income doubles. In addition, two-thirds of Bangladeshis who return to the country after working abroad for a few years are entrepreneurs or start their own businesses.
According to the report, the working-age population in many countries will decline rapidly in the coming decades. As a result, migration can be a unique opportunity for economies and people. In this, they can play a role in the growth of both the home country and the destination country of the immigrants.
It also said global competition for workers and talent will intensify as the global working population ages.
The report advises migrant-sending countries to identify labour migration as a clear part of their development strategies. It is also suggested that countries receiving migrants facilitate their integration and address the social implications that cause concern among citizens.
