Awami League's expelled mayor Jahangir Alam has submitted the nomination papers for himself and his mother for the mayor post for upcoming the Gazipur City Corporation (GCC) elections.
He submitted the papers at the returning officer's office at 3pm on Thursday.
Dhaka TribuneAfter submitting the papers, he said: “I have submitted my nomination paper in the manner required by the election law, following the interests of democracy.”
“I know I can be hurt in the process But I am ready to give my life for my mother. I want my mother to be healthy and well. I bear responsibility for lying for 18 months. I want to get rid of it,” he added.
He also said: “You all know I was voted mayor by millions of votes in 2018. You also saw what has been done to me.”
Jahangir Alam later asked for cooperation from the people of Gazipur.
Later, addressing the journalists, he said: "You have to reveal the truth for the sake of democracy in this city. Do not harm anyone with any lies and slander. All the candidates are good. I will not go against anyone. I want to stay in my principles, ideals, and my mother's side. That's why I ask for your help.”
Earlier, supporters of Jahangir Alam collected nomination papers for him for the GCC elections.
Nomination paper was also collected for Jahangir Alam's mother Zayda Khatun for the mayor position.
In this regard, Gazipur City Corporation Election Returning Officer Faridul Islam said: "Jahangir's representative collected the two nomination papers from the returning officer around 3pm on Wednesday."
According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission, candidates can collect and submit the nomination papers within April 27.
Selection of nominations on April 30, last date for withdrawal of candidature is May 8.
Symbols will be allotted on May 9 and voting will be held on May 25.
