Four railway employees have been suspended over the train crash incident in Comilla's Nangalkot.
The Nangalkot station authorities confirmed the matter on Monday afternoon, as per the instruction of Md Shariful Alam, deputy chief information officer of the Railways Ministry.
The suspended are train guard (Chittagong division) Abdul Quader, locomaster (Dhaka Headquarters) Md Jashim Uddin and assistant locomaster (Dhaka Headquarters) Md Mohsin and the maintainer of Hasanpur station Signal Wahid.
Meanwhile, a five-member committee, led by Additional District Magistrate Md Mosharef Hossain, has been formed to determine the cause of the train accident.
According to district administration sources, the committee has already begun its investigation and expects to submit the report within the next three days.
On Sunday evening, around 6pm, the freight train on line number four at Hasanpur Railway Station was struck from behind by the Sonar Bangla Express train, which was traveling at 77 kilometres per hour toward Dhaka.
The collision caused six carriages of the train to derail. A total of seven carriages from both trains were derailed, injuring 35 people, including 12 officials of the Election Commission.
Of the injured, 14 were treated at Nangalkot Upazila Health Complex, one at Chauddagram Upazila Health Complex and several others at local diagnostic centers in Hasanpur Bazaar.
On Monday, the railway authorities informed that the rescue operation is still undergoing.
Although they said the rescue work would be completed soon, the authorities could not provide a specific timeframe.
