In the outgoing month of March, 549 accidents occurred on roads, railways and waterways which killed 592 people and injured 1,167.
The information was revealed in the accident monitoring report of Bangladesh Passengers' Welfare Association accident monitoring cell.
The report was published in a statement signed by the secretary general of the organization Mozammel Haque Chowdhury on Wednesday.
During this time, 538 people were killed and 1,138 people were injured in 487 road accidents.
At the same period, 47 people were killed and 15 injured in 53 railway accidents.
Seven people were killed, 14 were injured and two were missing in nine accidents on the waterway.
Most motorcycle accidents occurred in this month in which 163 people were killed and 97 injured in 152 motorcycle accidents.
The road accidents identified 179 drivers, 101 pedestrians, 60 transport workers, 122 students, 13 teachers, 12 law enforcers, 90 women, 50 children, two journalists, seven freedom fighters, two lawyers, an engineer and five political party leaders.
Among them, three policemen, three army men, two Ansar members, one air force member, 140 drivers of various transports, 93 pedestrians, 67 women, 37 children, 42 students, 25 transport workers, nine teachers, six freedom fighters, three doctors, one journalist, two lawyers and five leaders and activists of different political parties were killed.
During this period, 666 vehicles were identified in organized accidents. It shows that 16.81% buses, 28.23% trucks-pickup-covered vans and lorries, 4.65% cars-jeep-microbuses, 3.75% CNG-powered autorickshaws, 23.12% motorcycles, 14.11% battery-powered vehicles, rickshaws and easybikes, and 9.30% of Nachiman-Kariman-Mahindra-tractor and laguna have been affected by road accidents.
Of the total accidents, 57.49% occurred after coming under vehicles, 15.19% in head-on collisions, 16.42% after falling in ditches, 9.65% in miscellaneous causes and 1.23% in train-vehicle collisions.
The analysis of the types of accidents shows that 33.06% of the total accidents occurred in this month on national highways, 23.20% on regional highways, and 35.11% on feeder roads.
Besides, 6.16% of the total accidents occurred in Dhaka city, 1.23% in Chittagong city and 1.23% occurred at railway crossings.
According to the observation of Bangladesh Passengers' Welfare Association, the significant cause of road accidents in March include:
1. Driver's incompetence and reckless driving
2. Reckless speed and dangerous overtaking
3. Taking defective vehicles on the road
4. Free movement of unfit vehicles
5. Not specified working hours and salary of drivers
6. Lack of sidewalks or abandoned sidewalks, and market on roadsides
7. Carelessness of passengers and pedestrians
8. Poor enforcement of traffic laws and violation of traffic laws
9. Due to the massive increase in small vehicles, road accidents are increasing
