Jasmine's death in custody: 11 members of RAB being interrogated

The panel formed by RAB to probe into the incident is now in Rajshahi

Update : 30 Mar 2023, 10:25 PM

In connection with the death of a woman named Sultana Jasmine in Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) custody in Naogaon, 11 members of RAB-5 are being interrogated.

The members have been called to the force's Rajshahi headquarters.

Assistant Director of Law and Media Wing of RAB ANM Imran Hossain confirmed the matter Thursday.

He said that those who were in that operation on March 22 are being called to the headquarters for investigation. He said that among those being interrogated are an army man, a police official and a driver.

Imran Hossain said that the committee formed by  RAB to investigate the incident is now in Rajshahi. The committee is interrogating every RAB member involved in the operation. The probe committee will take action against them if they are found guilty.

Earlier on March 22, RAB arrested land office employee Sultana Jasmine in Naogaon after Joint Secretary Enamul Haque, working in the Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner's office, filed a complaint. After four hours of the arrest, RAB took Jasmine to Naogaon Sadar Hospital when she fell ill. From there she was sent to Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. She died there on Friday.

Jasmine's family alleged that Jasmine died due to torture in RAB custody. However, denying the allegations, RAB said that the 45-year-old had fallen ill after the arrest.

Meanwhile, RAB Thursday arrested Al Amin, Jasmine's ‘aide', in a Digital Security Act case filed against the duo.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of RAB-3 conducted a raid in Dhaka's Shahjahanpur area and arrested Md Al Amin (32), RAB-3's Senior ASP (Media) Farzana Haque said in a press release.

According to RAB, Al Amin is an ‘aide' of Sultana Jasmine.

"Al Amin and his team members used a fake Facebook ID of Joint Secretary Md Enamul Haque, working at the Rajshahi Divisional Commissioner's office, to embezzle millions of taka by luring unemployed youths with government jobs," says the RAB press release.

Later, when the official came to know about the matter, he filed the DSA case with Rajpara Police Station of Rajshahi city against Al Amin and "his associate" Sultana Jasmine, who was arrested on March 23, it said.

During primary interrogation, Al Amin confessed to his involvement, reported UNB.
