The Highway Police has filed 34 cases against vehicles in two days for speed limit violations on the Dhaka-Mawa-Bhanga Expressway in Shibchar upazila of Madaripur.
The police unit has increased its activities to control the speed of vehicles on the expressway following a deadly road crash that took place on Sunday.
Nineteen people were killed and 30 others were injured as an Emad Paribahan bus fell into a ditch as the driver lost control of the wheel due to speeding.
Abu Naim Md Mofazzel Haque, officer-in-charge of Shibchar Highway police station, said: "Thirteen cases have been registered from Tuesday morning to 4:15pm due to violation of speed limit. On Monday, the day after the accident, 21 cases were registered for the same offence. There were 34 cases in two days. Apart from this, cases are also being filed for various other crimes.”
According to Highway Police sources, a total of 284 cases were filed in February due to violations of the speed limit on the expressway. In January, this number was 315.
Meanwhile, Additional District Magistrate Pallab Kumar Hazra, head of the investigation committee formed by the district administration, said that the investigation work for the second day is still going on.
“The investigation report will be submitted by tonight (Tuesday night),” he said.
