DSA case: Trial against Evaly’s Rassel-Shamima begins

Accused Shamima is absconding, says lawyer

A Dhaka court on Thursday officially began the trial of e-commerce company Evaly's Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Mohammad Rassel and his wife and chairperson of the company Shamima Nasrin in a case under Digital Security Act for cheating customers.

The day for the hearing in the case was scheduled for Thursday in the court of Judge AM Zulfiqar Hayat of Dhaka Cyber Tribunal.

On this day, Rassel was brought to court. Advocate Ahsan Habib plead for his exemption which the court rejected and fixed April 29 as the date for taking evidence.

The other accused Shamima Nasrin is absconding, said Ahsan Habib.

Earlier, October 19, 2022 was the date for receiving of charge sheet in the case. On that day, Shamima applied for time through the lawyer without appearing in the court. The court rejected the application and issued an arrest warrant against her and fixed March 2 for hearing of the charge sheet.

On September 30, 2021, a customer named Alamgir Hossain filed the case against Evaly CEO Mohammad Rassel and his wife Shamima at Badda police station, on charges of embezzling money through digital fraud.

According to the case statement, the plaintiff ordered products worth Tk28 lakh from Evaly through two accounts on the company site and paid the bill.

Evaly promised to deliver the products within 45 days of the order. But the customer did not receive the products. The company also did not return the customer's money.

After investigating the case, the police pressed charges against the two Evaly bosses.
