Minister: No propaganda can hinder Awami League’s victory

Bangladesh will move forward despite all the rumors, said Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury

State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury on Wednesday said no disinformation or propaganda can hinder Awami League's victory in the election. 

“The main objective of a group in the country is to spread rumors and propaganda. They must be resisted. Rumors were also spread during the Liberation War but no one could stop our victory in the election. Bangladesh will move forward, no one can stop it,” he said. 

He was speaking as a chief guest at a seminar titled “Combat Digital Disinformation to Promote Good Governance,” at Dhaka's CIRDAP auditorium.  

The seminar was organized by the Institute for Environment and Development (IED) with the support of the US-based donor organization The Asia Foundation.

Tanvir Shakil Joy, member of parliament (MP) of Sirajganj-1 constituency, Nazmul Haque Prodhan, MP of Panchagarh-1 constituency and general secretary of Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSad), Dr Mushtuq Husain, former Ducsu general secretary and IEDCR advisor, Masum Billah, general secretary of Indian Media Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (IMCAB), Rebecca Sultana, project officer of UNDP Bangladesh, Nazmul Ahsan, manager of ActionAid Bangladesh, Shahana Akhter, assistant director of Department of Women Affairs, KM Shahiduzzaman, City Social Service officer, Kazi Faisal Bin Seraj, The Asia Foundation's country representative in Bangladesh, Arju Afrin Cathy, general secretary of Dhaka University Rokeya Hall Debate Club, Alkama Azad, general secretary of Jahangirnagar University Journalists' Association (JUJA) and others spoke at the seminar. 

Presenting the main article, Dr Shantanu Majumder, professor of Department of Political Science at Dhaka University, said political objectives are tried to be achieved by spreading various rumors and propaganda which damages democracy. 

“All parties spread disinformation and rumors during elections. There is a fear of communal groups spreading rumors in the next election as well. The civil society and the youth of the country should be careful about this,” he added.
