The former Dhaka University teacher, who was in jail over the death of a woman who was hit and dragged by his car over a month ago, died on Friday afternoon.
The deceased teacher, Azhar Zafar Shah, 56, fell sick at Dhaka Central Jail.
Later, he was taken to the emergency unit of Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared him dead around 4pm, said Inspector Md Bacchu Miah, in-charge of DMCH police outpost.
The body has been kept at DMCH morgue for an autopsy.
Rubina Akhter, 45, died after being hit by Shah's private car and dragged several hundred yards on Dhaka University campus on December 2 last year.
The agitated people beat up the professor and vandalized the car after the accident.
A case was filed with Shahbagh Police Station on December 4 against him.
Azhar was sacked from the university in 2018 due to his prolonged absence.
