Criticism has arisen over the distribution of blankets to students in return for saluting at Meherpur Secondary Girls School and College on Wednesday.
Some of the students said that they were informed that a “important person” would be distributing blankets.
They were then asked to salute this “important person” Nilufa Ismin Rupa who gave one blanket to each of the students in return.
Aktaruzzaman, principal of Meherpur Secondary Girls' School and College, said: “The issue was initiated by the Girls' Guide after the school ended. I did not know about this. Later, I saw the matter on Facebook live. I have asked them to refrain from such activities in future.”
“I didn't know about blanket distribution to Girls' Guides in schools. No one took permission from the school authorities to provide blankets,” he added.
General Secretary of Meherpur Scout Sharif Uddin said: "Guard of honour or salute cannot be given to everyone. There are some legal regulations for this. It is an insult to the state. Those who did this are none of our Girls' Guides. They were wearing school clothes.”
In this regard, Nilufa Yasmin Rupa said on the phone: “There was no guard of honour, they took me to parade and saluted at the parade. I did a good job, what's wrong with that?”
However, she made no remarks regarding not taking permission from the college authorities for blanket distribution.
District Secondary Education Officer Monirul Islam said that no private person can be given a “guard of honour” or such a salute. Necessary action will be taken against the school for an explanation in this incident.
