Presidential flight: Ministry tells Biman to start probe into security clearance issue

Biman authorities had to bring back four of their staff members and officials from London in November

The Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism directed Biman Bangladesh Airlines to form a probe committee to find out how four of its staff members and officials got permission to board the November 16 VVIP presidential flight without security clearance.

The notice, issued on Sunday, was signed by Deputy Secretary Md Abdul Awal.

On November 15, State Minister for Civil Aviation and Tourism Md Mahbub Ali said a probe would be launched to find out who had been behind the issue.

On November 17, the Biman authorities had to bring back four of their staff members and officials from London after President Abdul Hamid's security detail found that the officials did not have security clearance required to board the president's return flight to Dhaka.

The Biman officials are Flight Purser Supti, Flight Steward Sinha, Flight Security Service Member Mariyam and Deputy General Manager (Security) Major Taiz Ibna Anowar.

None of the four officials accompanied the president during the outbound flight from Dhaka to Germany and London in late October. The officials flew to London on a regular flight on November 13 and they were due to come back on the president's flight on November 16.

An official of the Biman VIP Protection Wing told Dhaka Tribune on November 15 that Biman acting DGM (Flight Services) Nuruzzaman Ronju had concealed information about the four officials in the hope that they would be granted security clearance, but the president's security detail had spotted the anomaly.

However, Nuruzzaman Ronju denied that the cabin crew had been adjusted for the return flight from London.

In 2018, Ronju was accused of concealing information about a crew member failing a dope test during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's trip to attend the UN General Assembly in New York.

In 2014, while serving as DGM, he sexually harassed a cabin crew member in a hotel during a flight layover in London.

According to a subsequent divisional inquiry report, Ronju was found guilty by the investigation committee formed to look into the issue. Ronju had been accused of committing sexual harassment in collaboration with Flight Steward Sinha.
