Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner (DB) Harun-or-Rashid has claimed that Bangladesh University of Engineering Technology (Buet) student Fardin Nur Parash committed suicide by jumping into the river out of frustration and mental stress over financial problem.

The police official made the statement in a press conference at his office at the DB office on Minto Road around 7pm on Wednesday.

He said: “Fardin needed Tk60,000 to go to Spain to participate in a debate competition. However, he only managed Tk40,000 by borrowing from friends. As he was struggling to manage the rest, he decided to take his life.”

Meanwhile, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) called a press conference on Wednesday night claiming to have obtained important information and made progress in the investigation of the case.

ASP ANM Imran Khan, assistant director of law and media wing of RAB, confirmed the matter to Bangla Tribune.

Police recovered Fardin's body from the Shitalakhkhya River, behind a cotton mill at Siddhirganj, on November 7, three days after he went missing.

Fardin's father Nur Uddin Rana filed a case with Rampura police station against Fardin's friend named Bushra and some unidentified person on November 10.

The autopsy report, his family and classmates claimed that Fardin was murdered.

RAB and DB are continuing to probe the case since this incident.
