A Dhaka court has granted a four-day remand for Obaidur Rahman, the maternal uncle of Mariyam, the second wife of Satkhira-4 MP Gazi Nazrul Islam, in a case filed over allegations of abetting her suicide.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Md Ripon Hossain passed the order after a hearing on Thursday.

Public prosecutor Harun-or-Rashid confirmed the matter.

The investigating officer had sought a five-day remand, saying Obaidur, 38, was Mariyam’s maternal uncle and Gazi Nazrul’s driver and had been involved in various matters related to her marriage.

The remand application said investigators had found evidence linking Obaidur to Mariyam’s suicide and that he needed to be questioned to determine his role in the incident.

During the hearing, the prosecution said Obaidur was a witness to Mariyam and Nazrul’s marriage and had helped arrange their meetings.

Defence lawyer Golam Saber Chowdhury opposed the remand, saying Obaidur had no involvement in the incident and had instead objected to Nazrul’s conduct.

Obaidur was arrested in Dhaka on September 23 and sent to jail the following day.

On September 20, police recovered Mariyam’s hanging body from a flat at NAM Bhaban opposite the Parliament complex.

Her father, SM Masum Billah, later filed a case accusing Gazi Nazrul, his first wife Maksuda Islam and Obaidur of abetting her suicide.
