Speakers: Media activism is key component of nutrition governance

The media need to give public interest topics like nutrition and effective government more attention, says Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul

Eminent personalities including media people and nutritionists on Wednesday said that it is important for the media to play an effective role to ensure good nutrition governance to achieve sustainable development goals.

Individuals involved in editorial and policy-making for the media, as well as representatives of the Bangladesh National Nutrition Council and development figures, attended the event. 

The dialogue was organized by the consortium under the “Collective Responsibility, Action and Accountability for Improved Nutrition” project led by Concern Worldwide, an international development organization funded by the European Union. Bangladesh National Nutrition Council (BNNC) provides strategic support in this.

BNNC Director General Dr Hasan Shahriar Kabir was the chief guest in the dialogue, Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, prominent journalist and editor-in-chief of TV Today, presided over the meeting and Mir Masrur Zaman moderated the meeting.

Dr Hasan Shahriar Kabir stated that the policy and strategic facets of the total nutrition system are essentially tied to nutrition governance. 

“In light of these, many ministries have particular programs. There is a chance for the media to closely monitor how far these initiatives' advantages are being felt by the public. Additionally, the media can be a major force in disseminating dietary ideas,” he added.

According to Manjurul Ahsan Bulbul, the media need to give public interest topics like nutrition and effective government more attention. 

In these areas, specialized journalists should be created. Additionally, media should place emphasis on developing fresh subjects outside of the conventional format.

Independent TV's Millat Hossain, RTV's Shah Md Mustafizul Alam, Shah Alam of Desh Rupantor, Zahidul Islam of Bangladesh Television, Imtiar Shamim of Bangladesh Pratidin, Naeem Tarek of DBC News, Kajal Ghosh of Manabzamin, President of Economic Reporters Forum Sharmin Rinvi, Manas Ghosh of Asian TV, Zahid Nawaz Khan of Channel Eye, Prothom Alo's Partho Shankar Saha, Nadira Kiran and Prabas Amin of ATN Bengal, Borhanul Haque Samrat of Desh TV, Mir Mostafizur Rahman of Financial Express, Zahirul Alam of NTV, Mainul Islam of Ittefaq and others joined the event.

 Besides, the Deputy Director of BNNC, Dr Akhter Imam and Imranul Haque of Concern Worldwide spoke about various aspects of nutrition governance.

The speakers pledged to emphasize nutrition governance news in the media news stream and stressed the importance of improving local journalism in this regard.
