For the first time in Bangladesh, a set of twin babies, who are joined by a spinal cord, are being separated, and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will bear the medical expenses for them.
The complex surgery of the twins- Nuha and Naba, will be handled by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Hospital's (BSMMU) neurosurgeon Dr Mohammad Hossain. He is also a prof at the university's neurosurgery department.
Vice Chancellor of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) Professor Dr Md Sharfuddin Ahmed confirmed the matter to the media on Thursday.
Mehedi Hasan/Dhaka TribuneHe said that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is constantly checking up on the twins. “She has directed us to take the necessary medical measures for them. We will try our best to implement the prime minister's instructions.”
He later noted that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has also asked the doctors to do whatever it takes to properly take care of the twins - Nuha and Naba. “Therefore, if we have to get doctors from other institutions, we will do that.”
In this regard, Mohammad Hossain said that the surgery of the two children will be very complicated and time-consuming.
“The operation will take several steps,” he added.
Nuha and Naba are only 8 months old. Their father, Alamgir Rana, is a transport worker in Kurigram.
