In a reminder that age is no bar when it comes to education, Marufa Akhtar, a mother of four, is taking part in the ongoing HSC examinations with her daughter Shahi Siddika in Dimla upazila of Nilphamari.
The mother-daughter duo also passed the SSC exams together in 2020. Marufa had gotten GPA 4.60 while her daughter got GPA 3.
Both of them are students of Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Government College of Upazila.
Marufa said that like any other people in the society, she too wanted to identify herself as an educated person. “Because of this, I started my studies again,” she said.
On her indomitable journey, Marufa said: “I was an SSC candidate in 2003. But got married before the exam. After marriage, I was so busy with raising four children that there was no time to think about my studies. Later, with my own desire and the encouragement from my husband and children, I resumed my studies. I got admission in Chotakhata Fazil Madrasa. Then in 2020, I participated in the SSC exams with my daughter.”
Marufa Akhtar's husband Saidul Islam proudly said that seeing his wife's interest in studies, he tried to honour her wishes.
Hafizur Rahman, principal of Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Government College of Dimla Upazila, said: " Marufa is like setting an example. Age is not a barrier in education if people have willpower. Marufa's initiative will inspire many.”
