Parliamentary committee recommends banning motorcycles on highways

The recommendation has been made in order to prevent traffic jams and accidents on roads and highways

The Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges wants to ban motorcycles on highways. 

A recommendation in this regard came in the meeting of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges held at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban in Dhaka on Thursday.

The meeting was chaired by committee President Rowshan Ara Mannan while its members Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader, Enamul Haque, Rezwan Ahmed Tawfiq, Chalim Uddin Tarafder, Syed Abu Hossain, Rabeya Alim and Marina Jahan attended it.

According to the press release of the Parliament Secretariat, the committee has recommended for proper implementation of the Road Transport Act and banning of motorcycles and three-wheelers in order to prevent traffic jams and accidents on roads and highways.

Chairman of the committee Rowshan Ara Mannan told Bangla Tribune: “Unregistered Pathao and Uber motorcycles are causing heavy traffic in the capital. We have asked Pathao and Uber to stop movement of motorcycles which are not registered with BRTA.”

It has been recommended to introduce a system of prescribed clothing for drivers to stop illegal ride sharing in Dhaka city, said the press release.
