Commuters using the Uttara-Gazipur route faced immense sufferings due to traffic congestion as a result of the waterlogging.
There were gridlocks on the road from the morning.
Inconvenienced by the slow-moving traffic, many people said there was no option but to sit tight and wait for the road to clear.
Syed Shamsur Raihan, a resident of the Cherag Ali area of Tongi, said various parts of Gazipur were now waterlogged due to the rain.
Many people could not join work because of the traffic jam, he added.
Shamsul Haque, a passenger on a Mymensingh-bound bus, said vehicles had been standing at the same spot for hours and many had left for their destinations on foot.
Traffic Inspector Sajjad Hossain said drivers and passengers had been suffering since the morning due to cars getting stuck in ditches and potholes on the highway.
The road was now narrower because of the potholes and BRT project work, so vehicles were moving in one lane, he added.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Deputy Commissioner (Traffic) Alamgir Hossain said traffic police were working to clear the road and hoped that the situation would improve soon.
