A tribunal in Dhaka has sentenced Fuad Zaman, son-in-law of Sultan Shahriar Rashid, one of the killers of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, to seven years of rigorous imprisonment for making derogatory comments about the Father of the Nation.
Judge Mohammad As-Sams Jaglul Hossain of the Dhaka Cyber Tribunal handed down the sentence in a packed courtroom on Thursday.
The tribunal also fined Fuad Tk5,000, failure to pay which would result in another month in prison.
According to the statement of the case filed under the ICT Act, the police on September 13, 2018 arrested Fuad in the Hatirjheel area of the capital on charges of making remarks on social media glorifying the killers of Bangabandhu and dishonouring the memory of the Father of the Nation on August 15 of the same year.
On July 4, 2019, Sub-Inspector Ferdous Wahid, the investigating officer of the case, pressed charges against Fuad in the court of Dhaka’s chief metropolitan magistrate.
The court later transferred the case to the Dhaka Cyber Tribunal, which started the trial in the case by indicting Fuad on January 6 last year.
