Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) fined a total of 16 buses for overcharging passengers in Dhaka and Chittagong.
Nine mobile courts of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA) on Friday raided 14 spots in these two cities and imposed fines totaling Tk64,500, reports Bangla Tribune.
BRTA Deputy Director Hemayet Uddin said 42 cases have been filed in Dhaka and Chittagong regarding route violations, lack of permits, and fitness issues.
A fine of Tk1,90,500 was collected in these cases, he added.
On Wednesday, BRTA have decided to cut down bus fares by 5 poisha (Tk0.05) per kilometre following the recent reduction in fuel prices to alleviate the pressure on commuters.
As per the new decision, intercity bus fare was fixed at Tk2.45 per kilometre and long-distance bus fare was fixed at Tk2.15.
The government on Monday announced that it had reduced fuel oil prices by Tk5 per litre to alleviate the pressure on consumers caused by the recent price hikes due to the Russia-Ukraine war.
The authorities on August 7 increased the fare for long-distance buses by 22% to Tk2.2 per kilometre, fare for buses in Dhaka by 16.27% to Tk2.50 per kilometre and fare for buses outside the capital by 17% to Tk2.4 following an increase in fuel oil prices.
