Nationwide OMS, Food Friendly Program begins on Thursday

Government has increased the number of open market sale dealers three times for mitigating public suffering

The government is set to launch Food Friendly Program and sell rice at Tk30 per kg under the open market sale for low-income people from Thursday.

“The government is going to start Food Friendly Program and open market sale of rice from September 1 as per the directives of the prime minister,” Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder said on Tuesday.

Noting that the government has increased the number of open market sale dealers three times for mitigating public suffering, he said the number of open market sale centres has also been raised to 2,363 from 813.

According to officials, at each open market sale center, Trading Corporation of Bangladesh cardholders will get 5kg of rice twice a month at a price of Tk30 per kg while common people who do not have Trading Corporation of Bangladesh card will be given the same amount of rice against NID card.

Under the Food Friendly Programme, over five million families across the country will get 30kg of rice per month at a price of Tk15 per kg.

The Food Friendly Program or Khaddo Bandhob Karmasuchi and the open market sale will continue alongside selling rice and flour among Trading Corporation of Bangladesh cardholders at fair prices.

Rice will be sold openly in 50 trucks in Dhaka city and under the program, two tons of rice per truck will be sold daily under open market sale.
