The Election Commission (EC) has extended the application deadline for the registration of new political parties allowing interested parties two more months to register.
On May 26, the EC issued a notice of application within three months' time so accordingly, the last date to apply would have been August 29.
The time was extended on Wednesday at the request of Dr Zafrullah Chowdhury, founder and trustee of Gonoshasthaya Kendra (GK).
EC Joint Secretary SM Asaduzzaman confirmed the extension of the application time and said that it has been extended by two more months till October 29.
So far about 10 parties have applied in response to the EC's notification.
The five parties whose registrations have been cancelled so far are Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, Nagorik Oikya, Bangladesh Freedom Party, Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) and Jatiya Ganatantrik Party (Jagpa).
