The authorities have transferred Barguna Additional Superintendent of Police Muharam Ali, this time to Chittagong Range, over the incident of beating up Chhatra League activists on Monday.

ASP Muharam was transferred on Wednesday, a day after he was withdrawn and attached to the Barisal DIG office, though the investigation report has yet to arrive.

Barguna Superintendent of Police (SP) Jahangir Mallik on Wednesday said that five more police members were also withdrawn and attached to Bhola and Pirojpur district units on Tuesday.

The probe body formed by the police is set to submit its report on Thursday.

On the other hand, Barisal Range DIG SM Aktaruzzaman rushed to Barguna for taming the agitated ruling party leaders. He sat in a meeting with the leaders and activists of Barguna unit Awami League around noon.

“Everyone should show have good manners. ASP Muharam has been transferred so that he cannot influence the investigation. Moreover, when departmental action is taken against someone, the person is transferred or withdrawn first,” DIG Aktaruzzaman told Dhaka Tribune at the Circuit House Auditorium.

Barguna-1 MP and district unit Awami League President Dhirendra Debnath, Barguna-2 lawmaker and district AL Vice President Shaukat Hachanur Rahman Rimon, Barguna Deputy Commissioner Habibur Rahman, district AL General Secretary Jahangir Kabir along with senior leaders of the ruling party and its associate bodies were present at the meeting.

Later, MP Dhirendra told reporters that what the police officer had done with the Chhatra League members was illegal and unethical. He also thanked the Home Ministry, the Police Headquarters and the government for taking the matter seriously.

After Tuesday’s order, Dhirendra Debnath and a faction of Chhatra League demanded the expulsion of Muharam from the force for his excesses against the ruling party’s student front activists.

On the other hand, the Chhatra League’s central unit protested the withdrawal of ASP Muharam.
