There is no danger of flooding, says Bangladesh Water Development Board officials

Update : 04 Aug 2022, 05:01 PM

Incessant rain and water from upstream have caused the water level in the Jamuna River to rise.

In the last 24 hours, the water level rose by 29cm at Meghai Ghat point of Kazipur in the district and 27cm at Hardpoint in the city.

River erosion has occurred in char areas of Kazipur, Chauhali, Enayetpur and Shahjadpur of the district due to rapid rise in water.

Farmers in char and low-lying areas are worried about their Aman seedbeds and other crops lands.

On Thursday morning, 14.57 meters of water was recorded at Meghai Ghat point in Kazipur. Besides, 12.56 meters of water has been recorded at the Hardpoint end.

The water on that end rose by 29cm and is currently flowing 68cm below the danger line.

At the Hardpoint end, water level rose by 27cm and is flowing 79cm below the danger line.

Zakir Hossain, deputy assistant engineer of Sirajganj Water Development Board, said: “The water level of Jamuna River is increasing due to the upstream flow. The water level will rise for another 4-5 days. However, there is no danger of flooding.”

Shafiqul Islam, executive engineer of Sirajganj Water Development Board, said that we don’t have any flood forecast for now even if the water level of Jamuna River rises.
