Students of various educational institutions yesterday organized a procession and circled through several avenues of the capital marking the fourth year of the Road Safety Movement.
They began the march from Khilkhet area and ended the program at Kurmitola, and chanted slogans, demanding that the government increases the number of public transports and zebra crossings among other demands.
They alleged that the government had done very little as the nation passes the fourth year of the tragic accident that killed two students on July 29 in 2018.
The students of Kurmitola’s Shaheed Ramiz Uddin Cantonment School and College were killed when a Jabal-e-Noor Paribahan bus crashed into them on a sidewalk.
Protesting the incident on the same day, school and college students took to the streets, demanding safe roads and justice for the victims. The demonstration gained further momentum on August 4 when they gained support from university students.
However, on the same day, rumours spread that four students were supposedly beaten to death, one had his eyes gouged out, and four schoolgirls allegedly raped inside the Awami League president’s office in Dhanmondi.
Later, students locked horns with the police, and the Awami League supporters when they tried to lay siege to the office.
The clash soon fuelled more protests by students of different universities, and there were further clashes between students and law enforcement.
Later, sabotage cases regarding the incidents were filed and several students were arrested by the police. After spending two days in remand, and 12 days in prison, the detained students were granted bail before the Eid vacations.
Meanwhile, the authorities constructed an underpass in front of the school.
