The body of a dead dolphin, the second death reported in less than six days, was rescued from the Azimer Ghat area of West Gujra Union of Chittagong’s Raozan upazila on Wednesday.
Earlier on Monday, it was discovered in the Halda River, Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Abdus Samad Shikder confirmed to Dhaka Tribune.
He said the dolphin was floating dead in the Halda river's Azim Ghat section.
“The dolphin was later brought ashore by locals using a boat. As the dolphin's body was rotting and stinking, it was buried with the assistance of the locals” he added.
Prof Dr Manjurul Kibria, coordinator of Chittagong University's (CU) Halda River Research Laboratory, said: “I assume the dolphin died after becoming entangled in the fishing net. The dolphin's lower lip was severed and its teeth were thrown.”
Another dead dolphin was found in the river on July 14, taking the total toll to 37.
