The government has undertaken an initiative to bring members of all government and non-government organizations under dope testing to control drug addiction.
Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Home Ministry Md Shamsul Haque Tuku said this at a discussion in Dhaka on Tuesday.
“The constitution of separate authorities has already been recommended to make dope tests mandatory across the country,” Tuku, also former state minister for home affairs, said.
Somaj Kallyan and Unnayan Sangstha (SKUS) organized the discussion titled “Role of Dope Test in Drug Prevention” on the occasion of Anti-Drug Day at Dhaka Reporters’ Unity (DRU) auditorium.
Chaired by SKUS Chairman Jasmine Prema, the discussion was addressed, among others, by Mir Mostaq Ahmed Robi, MP, SM Shahzada and Syeda Rubina Akhter, health specialist Dr Lelin Chowdhury, journalist leaders Ashish Kumar Dey, Raju Ahmed, former general secretary of DRU, Moniruzzaman Mukul, DUJ Sports and Cultural Secretary Shakila Parvin, and Nripen Boidda of Faith in Action.
Journalist Nikhil Chandra Bhadra moderated the discussion, while Polash Ahsan of Ekattor Television presented the keynote speech.
Tuku hoped that under the new authority, dope tests will soon be mandatory in all sorts of recruitment including the police, government jobs and university admissions.
He said: “Dope tests for drivers have been started and the prime minister has directed to start dope tests for all sorts of recruitment and university admissions, which will bring drugs under control.”
