The Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) Unit of police on Thursday said that Mehedi Hasan Ami alias Rafi, 24, who was arrested in connection with the snatching of two death row convict militants from the court premises, was the coordinator of the incident.
The specialized unit also claimed that the militants' target was to abduct four of the 12 members.
Among the four, the main target was Arafat Rahman alias Siam. However, he was arrested by the police while escaping that day.
Mehedi was arrested on Wednesday, Md Asaduzzaman, head of Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime (CTTC) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), revealed the information in a press briefing on Thursday.
The head of CTTC said that Mehedi also took a huge amount of money to the court that day for the militants. On that day, he gave a huge amount of money to the fleeing militants.
He said Mehedi used to recruit the members of Askari wing of banned militant outfit Ansar al-Islam.
A Dhaka court on Thursday placed Mehedi on a seven-day remand, reports UNB.
On Sunday, two activists of banned militant outfit JMB who were sentenced to death in publisher Foisal Arefin Dipon murder case were snatched from police custody by their associates at Dhaka Chief Judicial Magistrate Court.
The escapees are Md Abu Siddique Sohel alias Sakib alias Sajid alias Shahab and Moinul Hasan Shamim alias Samir alias Sifat alias Imran.
They are members of the banned militant outfit Ansar al-Islam, who were sentenced to death in Jagriti Publications publisher Faisal Arefin Dipan murder case.
Police earlier announced Tk10 lakh for information on each of them.
Publisher Dipan, son of Prof Abul Kashem Fazlul Huq of Dhaka University, was hacked to death in his office on the second floor of Aziz Supermarket at Shahbagh in the city on October 31, 2015.
