Family members of Oliur Rahman Nayan, a worker of the BM Container Depot who died while live-streaming the fire incident on Facebook, are in great shock at how quickly they lost the 20-year-old.

He was the first to join live on Facebook and broadcast the fire incident on Saturday night but could not continue for long as there was an explosion that severed his internet connection and ended the broadcast, family sources said on Sunday.

The fire broke out at the depot at around 9pm and as firefighters began to put it out, there was an explosion and then the fire spread.

Nayan remained missing since then and the family members could not reach him on his phone, which fell from his hands during the explosion.

His body was taken to Park View Hospital in Chittagong at around 2am.

Later, the body was sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

His family, however, was informed of his death in the morning.

The government has announced to give Tk2 lakh in compensation to the families of each person killed in the fire.

Nayan, son of Ashik Miah of Fatiguli village in Karmadha Union under Kulaura upazila of Moulvibazar, was a worker at BM Container Depot.

He was the eldest among four brothers and two sisters. He joined the depot through one Mamun Mia, a resident of the same village, four months ago.

The family members were on their way to Sitakunda to bring the body to their village home.

Nayan’s mother Hasina Begum said that she had spoken to her son at around 2pm on Saturday. Nayan was happy when she talked to him for the last time and said he would come home soon, the mother said.
