More than half of the deceased were underage

At least 97 people have been killed in motorcycle-related accidents across the country amid the Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations over the last 10 days.

Among them, 51 were aged between 15 and 20, according to the Road Safety Foundation.

They said a total of 178 road accidents took place across the country from April 25 to May 5. During this time, a total of 249 people were killed.

People riding motorcycles accounted for 36.59% of the deceased.

Experts said the reason behind the high number of deaths in motorcycle accidents was that motorcycles were used as an alternative to public transport during the Eid traffic rush. The two wheelers are not ideal for long distance travel, hence their use raised the risk of accidents.

Moreover, many people carry passengers on their motorcycles without even learning to ride them properly, experts said.

Saidur Rahman, executive director of Road Safety Foundation, said: "People were forced to use motorcycles as a means of public transport. Although many were able to go to their native villages easily, this put their lives at risk.

"People can be saved from these deaths if the public transport system is made people-friendly," he added.
