Nation celebrates Pohela Boishakh with zeal

The first day of 1429 spreads joy and colour throughout the country amid festivities

The Bangla New Year celebration on Pohela Boishakh, or the first day of Bangla month Boishakh, has long been associated with the history and tradition of the Bengali nation.

After almost two years of glumness due to the Covid-19 pandemic, on Thursday, Bangladesh went back to celebrating and consolidating unity nationally through all the traditional programs.

Apart from Mongol Shobhajatra, the traditional procession with colourful floats, masks and props showcasing the country’s folklore and the theme of festivities, people from all walks of life celebrated the day throughout the country through various programs – welcoming 1429.

In Khulna city, many organizations brought out a few Mongol Shobhajatra of their own while Khulna University organized many festivities. All those were attended by a large number of people and their families from all tiers of society.

Besides the Mongol Shobhajatra, in Bagerhat, a seven-day Boishakhi Mela was inaugurated at the District Council Auditorium. Government officials, teachers and people from all over the district joined the festivities.

Awami League Presidium member and Thakurgaon 1 MP Ramesh Chandra Sen among others took part in the Mongol Shobhajatra arranged in major parts of Thakurgaon city.

Government officials and students, activists of socio-cultural organizations joined the Mongol Shobhajatra in Pabna. Later, a cultural program was held in the auditorium of District Shilpakala Academy in Pabna city.

In Tangail, festive programs and games were organized on the grounds of Shilpakala Academy at the initiative of Tangail Municipality. Later, patriotic songs, dances and discussions were held at the Shilpakala Academy auditorium.

In Gopalganj, Pohela Boishakh celebrations were held at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University. The university’s Bangla Department organized a Mongol Shobhajatra on campus and inaugurated a wall magazine called “Boishakhi Barta”. The university also organized a kite flying festival as part of the program.  

In Dinajpur, on the occasion of Pohela Boishakh, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) gave gifts and sweets to India’s Border Security Forces (BSF) members. In order to carry out their duties properly while maintaining friendship at the border, they hoped this will further strengthen the existing good relation and harmony between the two forces.

Barisal district administration organized and held various programs for the Bengali New Year including Mongol Shobhajatra, a children's drawing competition and Boishakhi Mela. The joyous fanfare also included palanquins, horses, kites and masks and other props representing Pohela Boishakh.
