Jagannath University (JnU) is celebrating Bangla new year 1432 in a festive atmosphere with vibrant decorations, a colourful procession, the university’s first-ever Boishakhi Mela, and cultural performances.

The new year procession began at 9:30am on Monday, organized by the Faculty of Fine Arts.

This year’s theme, “Biplober siri beye asuk neme alo, noboborshe mukto jibon thakuk aro bhalo (Let light descend down the stairs of revolution, may the new year bring a freer, better life)” sets the tone for the festivities.

The procession started from the university premises, circled the historic Victoria Park in Ray Shaheb Bazar, and returned to campus.

The theme for this year’s procession was “The Traditional Rural Culture of Bengal,” featuring replicas of bullock carts, birds, animals, floral arrangements, and rural artifacts.

Addressing the students after the procession in front of the Faculty of Science, Vice Chancellor Professor Dr Md Rezaul Karim said: “This celebration will play an important role in nurturing students’ cultural practices and creativity.”

Following the procession, a day-long Boishakhi Mela and cultural programs commenced. This marks the first time Jagannath University has organized a Boishakhi Mela.

Stalls set up near the Faculty of Science, Muktomoncho, and beneath the Rafiq Building offer handicrafts, traditional cakes (pitha-puli), jewelry, rural toys, books, and various cultural items.

Stalls have also been allotted for Boishakhi-themed publications. A special stage has been constructed in the Faculty of Science field for live band performances.

Starting at 3pm, the concert will feature popular band Ashes, along with Chander Gari and Metal Error from outside the campus.

Bands from the university’s Band Music Association, including Kimvut, Komol Gandhar, Offside, and several solo performers, will also perform. Telecom company Airtel is supporting the stage setup and event coordination.
