Police on Wednesday arrested Hefazat-e-Islam leader Md Mufti Habibullah Mahmud Kashemi from the capital’s Vatara area in a case over 2013 Shapla Chattar violence.

Md Azharul Islam Mukul, chief of Demra zonal team, conducted a drive around 5:20 pm and arrested him, said Md A Ahad, deputy commissioner, Detective Branch, Wari.

Earlier on April 18, Hefazat's Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haq was arrested from a madrasah in Mohammadpur area.

More arrests of Hefazat’s senior leaders were made recently after Hefazat supporters' acts of violence at different parts of the country protesting the visit of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi marking the celebration of the golden jubilee of the country’s independence last month.
