Bangladesh to sizzle in heatwave at least till Sunday

Temperature may rise even at night on Saturday, meteorologists forecast

Update : 24 Apr 2021, 06:18 PM

Bangladesh is unlikely to get any respite from the heatwave sweeping across the country anytime soon as it is set to linger on for at least another day, according to the Met Office.

Temperatures are set to soar across the entire country, except Sylhet Division, on Sunday, reports Bangla Tribune citing the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD). Sylhet may be spared as there are chances of rain or thundershowers at one or two areas of the district.

The districts and regions that have been worst affected by the ongoing heatwave are Madaripur, Sandwip, Feni, Rajshahi, Khulna, Bagerhat, Jessore, Chuadanga and Khepupara.

The country’s highest temperature of 37.5 degrees Celsius was recorded on Friday in Khulna and the lowest temperature of 18.5 degrees Celsius on Saturday in Srimangal upazila of Sylhet.

A trough of westerlies lies over West Bengal and the adjoining area, the Met office further said, adding that the temperature may also rise at night.

If the mercury in the thermometer rises to the 36 degrees Celsius to 38 degrees Celsius range, meteorologists call it a mild heat flux. When the temperature rises to the 36 degrees Celsius  to 40 degrees Celsius range, it is called moderate heat flow. If the temperature exceeds 40 degrees Celsius, the Met Office considers it as an intense heatwave.
